JEED is open to submissions and publishes articles on a rolling basis.
Please refer to the checklist below for submission requirements. The Author Guidelines page summarizes additional information on the submission process, including details about formatting, supporting documents, and more. Following this guidance will help your paper get reviewed quickly and ultimately provide a smoother path toward final acceptance and publication.

JEED-I: INSIGHTS in Ecological Engineering (~3,000 words). Targeted research and science communications focused on compelling INSIGHTS in the field.
Original Research Papers (~6,000 words). Articles of original hypothesis-driven research based on new data collection, data analysis, or modeling.
Subject-Area Reviews (~10,000 words). In-depth review of the literature on a specific ecological engineering design-related topic.
Research Case Studies (~6,000 words). Focused examinations of a particular case within a real-world context, typically assessing before and after implementation of an ecological engineering design or process.
Design Research Portfolios (~1,000 words plus graphics). Presentations of original research with a visual emphasis on the design approach, process, and results.
Editorials, book reviews, and commentaries. Contact an Editor if interested in submission.
Before submitting your manuscript and other materials, review this checklist to ensure you have met all the JEED requirements. Following this checklist will ensure that your submission can be processed efficiently. Submissions that are incomplete or not in full adherence to this checklist may be returned.
Review the aims and scope of JEED to determine if your manuscript is suitable for this journal.
Add any additional information you would like to share with others reading your work, such as a profile photo, short biography, website, Google Scholar page, and social media information.
Add your unique ORCID identifier. If you do not have one, register with ORCID to establish a unique ID that will distinguish you and your work from other researchers.
Email [email protected] with Your Intent to Submit
Send a brief email to [email protected] to let us know you intend to submit. Use the subject line, “Intent to Submit.”
In your message, provide this information:
The corresponding author’s name, affiliation, and email address
The manuscript title
The category you feel best describes the content of your manuscript
The date you expect to have your full manuscript, supplementary materials, signed author agreement form, and cover letter ready for submission
An editor will respond to tell you whether you should email your submission (described below) or upload it to the online submission portal (expected to launch in fall 2023).
Prepare Cover Letter
Use the provided template.
Describe how the submitted work meets the aims and scope of JEED.
Disclose any additional information related to conflicts of interest not covered in the manuscript Conflict of Interest Statement.
Disclose any restrictions on the ability to share study raw data, materials or information as required.
Suggest a minimum of three possible peer reviewers.
Save your cover letter as a Microsoft Word file.
Prepare Author Agreement Form
Read the form, complete all fields, and sign where indicated. A digital signature is acceptable.
Save your completed form as a PDF file.
Develop Manuscript
Download the manuscript template and prepare your manuscript using the formats and guidance given.
Make sure your manuscript does not exceed the word count for the paper type.
Include abstract, graphical abstract (optional), and photographs (optional) in the manuscript file.
Follow the citation style provided in the template and provide complete references. JEED uses The Council of Science Editors (CSE) Name-Year citation style. Be certain your chosen reference management software has a plug-in for CSE Name-Year citation style.
Tables and figures should appear in the text after first mention.
Get prior written approval for reuse of any tables, figures, or other copyrighted material.
Save your manuscript as a Microsoft Word file.
Develop Supplementary Material (optional)
If submitting supplementary material, develop the material into a single PDF file.
At the top of the supplementary material, include the title of your paper and name all authors and their affiliations, as presented at the beginning of your manuscript.
Save your supplementary material as a PDF file.
Proofread All Documents
Proofread your cover letter. Make sure it includes all requested information.
Proofread your author agreement. Make sure all requested fields have been completed. Sign and date the agreement.
Proofread your manuscript.
Double-check all in-text citations and each entry in your reference list to ensure that they conform to CSE Name-Year citation style.
Double-check all references to ensure that they include working DOIs.
Proofread any supplementary material.
Submit Cover Letter, Author Agreement, Manuscript, and Supplementary Material
To determine your submission method, refer to the email response you received to your “Intent to Submit.”
If your response instructs you to email your submission, send your files to [email protected]. Attach your cover letter, signed author agreement form, manuscript, and supplemental material to a single email with the subject line, “JEED Submission Materials.” Include your full name and contact information in the body of your message. A member of the Editorial Board will reply to confirm receipt.
If your response instructs you to upload your files to the online submission portal, visit the URL provided in the response. Follow the on-screen prompts for registration and upload. You will receive an automated response confirming receipt.
JEED’s new online submission portal is in development and will be ready for use in fall 2023. Until that time, JEED will continue to use email for all submissions.
